Providing access to the arts and the endless possibilities they extend, Inner-City Arts offers a safe, creative space where the youth of Los Angeles are invited to explore their own potential. Creating a bridge between the studio and the classroom, Inner-City Arts’ unique approach to arts education measurably impacts personal and academic outcomes for children and youth, including those students with Limited English Proficiency who are at risk of academic failure.
Downtown Labs collaborates with Inner-City Arts to teach a Style Zine class to students attending classes in Downtown LA. The curriculum includes: visual presentations, photographic and written assignments, discussion, and critiques.
This semester, Downtown Labs has partnered with the clothing company Born x Raised to give students a Style Zine challenge. Student photographers will work with a zine maker, photographer, creative director, and stylist to create the Style Zine – concept to completion. Guest teachers include Valerie J. Bower and Chad Pitman. Students will be both the photographers and models for this project. The final zine will be presented to Born x Raised for a professional critique.
Dates: February – April, 2018
Admission: 15 students
