This seminar explores photography in book form, with an emphasis on concept and narrative, and a concentration on the essential steps involved in making both artist books and trade books. Aspects of editing, sequencing, layout, handmade maquettes, and design strategies of the participant’s work. The class will view additional books as examples and case studies of various bookmaking approaches and be provided with guidelines, best practices and essential steps to successful photographic bookmaking.

BIO: Christian Patterson’s widely influential books include Redheaded Peckerwood (Winner, Recontres d’Arles Author Book Award) and Bottom of the Lake (Shortlist, Paris PhotoAperture Foundation Photobook Award). His work is in the collections of the J. Paul Getty Museum and National Gallery of Art and he is a Guggenheim Fellow and winner of the Vevey International Photography Award.
